It is definitely possible, however, as the above poster noted, there are some countries that do not allow adoption from their country. Many countries are party to the Hague Convention, which governs international adoption. It is wise to adopt from a country that is part of the Hague Convention as is the United States.

The great news is that there is a wealth of information on international adoption available on Adoption.com. To view adoption policies by country, you can visit each country's page in the International Adoption section to find out more about the adoption process and if adoption is even allowed from said country.

There has been a bit of controversy lately over the role of the State Department in International Adoption. With the introduction of the Hague Convention, some adoptive parents and adoption agencies have experienced that international adoption is often over regulated. Many in the adoption world are speaking out and taking a look at the policies that govern International Adoption and calling for reform. However, many are still successfully adopting from abroad. It is important to stay up to date and informed about the adoption policies within your country of interest.
