Kaylee is a 14-year-old girl who was adopted shortly after she was born. Because hers is an open adoption, she has always known her birth mother. She’s always had answers to her questions about where she came from and why she was placed for adoption. Open adoption has provided her with a solid foundation on which she can build a strong sense of identity.
She writes that she often gets the question, “Why did your real mother give you away?” I love her spunky response: “Okay, first of all, I was not given away; this is not a thrift shop or a bargain market. Second, my biological and adoptive moms are both my real moms, and they both love me.”
