Tammy Oswalt wrapped her arms around the birthday gift of a lifetime: her son.
After placing him for adoption nearly 18 years ago, Oswalt never expected to set eyes on her son again. “A mom doesn’t give up her child like a sack of potatoes. All I could give him was love and sometimes that’s not enough. I had to make the decision to give him up because I did love him.”
Placing her beautiful son, however, was one of the hardest things Oswalt has ever had to go through. Over the years, she dealt with the emotional guilt and loss she felt, but the hole in her heart would never go away.
That hole was filled when Oswalt’s daughter, Sammy Hewett, arranged for her brother and mom to meet for the first time after so many years. “As soon as she said, ‘Meet your son, Dylan,’ I broke. I waited almost 19 years for this moment.”
Once her child is born, a mother’s heart is never the same. There will always be that special attachment no matter how many years or miles have kept them apart. How has becoming a mother changed you?
