Family Is Not Defined By Our Genes

Family comes in many forms, but its most essential characteristic is love and commitment . . . not shared genes.

Oprah said, “Biology is the least of what makes someone a mother.”

I believe what she meant by that was, families can be made in lots of ways – through biology, through legal adoption, through informal adoption – but it’s the years of commitment and worry, the tears wiped away and the tears shed, the teaching moments and the shouting moments, the fun times and the frustrating times, that tie people together, that really binds people together as a family.
