There are a few steps you can take to find closed adoption records. Adoption laws are ever changing and allowing adoptees more and more access to their once hidden pasts. As we grow as a society, those in power are realizing that adoptees should be given the right to know where they came from.  There is a push for adoption records to become completely open and full closed adoption to become a thing of the past.

Many states are now allowing adoptees access to their adoption files when they are age 18. However, a lot of this information is redacted in order to allow birth parents the right to privacy if they so choose. Trying to open closed adoption records can still be incredibly trying. You may find little success, but you may be pleasantly surprised.

You also have to option to petition the court to unseal your adoption records. You can see a sample petition here. There is no way to guarantee your records will be unsealed, however, it is worth trying. You may also want to reach out to the agency through which your adoption occurred to see if they would be willing to provide any information. They may not, however, they may have some information that would be allowable and give you clues to further your search.
