When Rene was a child she wished that she could have a family that would protect her and not be in the abusive home she was in. While she had to endure the abuse throughout her childhood, she grew up to have a family of her own–one that would be sheltered from abuse.
Rene adopted three children from foster care. She felt like she could understand what kind of hurt and trauma these children had been through. She wanted to prevent that abuse from ever happening again.
She writes about the difficulty of raising these children that experienced so much hardship. Parenting was not an easy task. But the children, at their own pace, began to thrive in her home. At first, it was hard to ever participate in activities that so many families could do with ease. It took time and patience and their family’s own special activities to help each child feel safe.
Growing up in an abusive home is the reality for too many children. It is parent’s like Rene that lead by example for the change and help that these children so desperately need.
