Special Needs Adoptions Have Increased

In 2007, 32,402 children with special needs were adopted in the United States; in 2014, that number had almost doubled to 61,341. This number represents 88.5% of all non-relative adoptions in the US.

In adoption, “special needs” has a broad definition that includes older children, sibling groups, children from minority racial or ethnic backgrounds, or children with a wide range of physical, mental, or emotional disabilities.
