A lot of people are afraid of adopting because they’re worried about the unknowns – what if a child presents challenges they’re not ready to cope with?
When Shannon Evans and her husband began the adoption process, they decided they weren’t ready to parent a child with special needs, so they indicated as much on their adoption paperwork.
But life has a way of unfolding in a way different from how we plan it, and that is what happened. When they met their son, then 10 months of age, in an orphanage in Africa, it was obvious that he had special needs – but they knew he was their son – and they were willing to do whatever they needed to help and advocate for him.
The lessons they have learned in the ensuing years have been life-changing.
