Changing A Child’s Name After Adoption

The topic of changing a child’s name after adoption is a controversial one, to say the least.  “There are strong cases to be made for keeping a child’s given name,” writes adoptive mom Elizabeth Curry. “There are equally strong cases to be made for changing a child’s name and indicating a new chapter of life with new alliances.”

As an adoptive mom of seven, Curry has plenty of experience in this area. In adopting a child and making the decision to change or keep his or her name, she says, there are a number of elements you should take into consideration, ranging from how the child feels about their name to naming patterns in your family.
