8 Things Being A Foster Mom Taught Me About Parenting

Emily Westbrooks and her husband were only signed up to adopt, but they were licensed as foster parents as well – so when they were asked to take a temporary placement, they said yes. And, says Emily, “It was the single most transformative thing I’ve ever done.”

At that point, her (adopted) daughter, whom she’d been able to bring home from the hospital as a newborn, was four months old, and while Emily had been learning a lot from the experience of caring for a newborn, she found foster parenting to be an adventure that “stretched and changed” her in unique ways.
