Foster mom Emily Westbrooks wants you to know the truth about foster care.
One of the most important things she wants you to know is that it doesn’t take supernatural powers to be a foster parent. Yes, she says, she was scared when they began fostering. She was scared of the pain of saying good-bye to a child she’d come to love. And yes, this is something she has had to do. She writes, “When we handed over Baby J, whom we’d had in our home for two months, I felt like I’d been hit by a truck. Packing away the baby gear for another day was hard. However, we can do hard things, and I wouldn’t undo a single moment of those two months with her.” She learned that she was capable of dealing with the tough parts of foster care – and, she says, you probably are, too.
